New Show at KMOCA Recent works by four area artists: Opening reception: Stuart Bigley presents acrylic and prismacolor works from a series titled "Siblings." Allowing the materials to dictate the evolution of the paintings, Stuart's main influences include the Abstract Expressionists. Stuart has had numerous shows in NYC and throughout the NorthEast. Born in Cleveland, he has lived in New Paltz for over 35 years and is co-founder of the Unison Art Center. Gloria Kapilow Mirsky presents small drawings created with graphite, conte pencil, and pastels. Influences include Eva Hesse, Agnes Martin and Jasper Johns. She has previously shown her work at other regional galleries and studied painting and dance at Bennington College. Gloria grew up in NYC and currently lives in Kerhonkson. Trapeze is one of her hobbies, and she's even tried hang gliding, too. Vincent Pidone presents graphite on paper with encaustic works from his ongoing series called "Drawings About Books About Drawings." Vincent says he's looked at so many "how to" books and exhibition catalogues that he finally had to start drawing his own. Vincent is a self-taught artist and a Kingston native. Kaete Brittin Shaw presents a series called "Saturn's Wishbone." These mixed media pieces combine river wood from the Rondout Creek and discs of hand-built porcelain. Strongly influenced by nature, recent showings include the outdoor sculpture show at Chesterwood in Stockbridge. Originally from Princeton, Kaete earned her MFA at SUNY New Paltz and currently lives in High Falls.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Natural Histories" Featuring artists from NYFA's MARK program. For generations New York City has been recognized as the art hub of New York State, which seems natural enough being that it's an art hub for the entire planet. But recent years have seen a significant increase in the numbers of artists
plying their crafts in other locations throughout the state. While this trend
has helped artists deal with the cost of living, and To address these challenges, the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) introduced its MARK program this year, designed specifically to help artists living outside of New York City to deal with the professional side of their creative practice. MARK started in January and runs through June with monthly seminars held throughout the state. Groups of a dozen artists were selected to represent various regions of New York. Locally, the MARK program has partnered with the Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale. "Natural Histories" is a group show featuring the works of the artists from our region who have been taking part in this year's MARK program. They are: Michael Asbill, Cristina de Gennaro, Gordon Fearey, Allison Leach, Jill Parisi, E. Elizabeth Peters, Kaete Brittin Shaw, Elizabeth Unterman, Lori Van Houten, Pamela J. Wallace, Tona Wilson, and Sara Worden. The show will be on display at KMOCA beginning Saturday, June 12, 2010.
