My functional work in cast porcelain is inspired by the spiral. Casting involves pouring a liquid clay, called slip, into a plaster mold. The original models for the molds were created from thrown cylinders cut on an angle and joined. New designs have been developed from taking sections of earlier pieces and re-assembling them. In this way the shell bowl morphed into a butter dish and sections taken from a column vase became a sake set.

The bowls, which are my most popular design, give the impression of a spiral when they are stacked and reflect my continuing interest in the integration of functionalism with sculptural form. As individual pieces they are utterly functional, but when they are stacked they assume sculptural qualities. Other tabletop forms in the spiral theme have been created to complement the bowls which were among my first cast designs. They include nested trays in several sizes which can serve as platters, sushi sets, sake sets, cups, butter dishes, vases, candlesticks, soap dishes, and "shell" bowls. These pieces can be used to create a complete non-traditional table setting.

Multicolored glazes add another dimension to my work. A layered look is achieved by sponging a gloss glaze over a matt base often resulting in a color that is complex and difficult to name. New colors are added to my palette regularly.

Since porcelain is the strongest ceramic material, these pieces can be used every day. They are dishwasher safe and microwave proof, but not ovenproof.
