My “Prayer Flag” installation in the sculpture garden at Unison Arts has been an evolving work in progress since 2018. This Fall, after considerable reworking, it is fully expressing my interpretation of the symbolism of prayer flags. According to Buddhist belief, they are intended to spread positive energy far and wide and this is my personal contribution to that goal.
Like most of my outdoor sculpture, "Prayer Flags” is sited in a tree, in this case a cedar, which is an integral part of the piece. The moss covered limbs of the tree from which the “flags” are suspended add another dimension to the porcelain and layered screen from which they’re composed.
One of my fascinations with outdoor work is witnessing the changes that occur with each new season. The quality of the light, the range of colors and the atmospheric environment all have a transformative impact on the sculpture.
The sculpture garden at Unison Arts is located in New Paltz, NY, is free, and is open from dawn to dusk.
